What lighting fixtures are allowed to be installed in a plenum space?

According to NEC Article 300.22(C), electrical equipment installed in air-handling (plenum) spaces must meet specific construction and material requirements to minimize smoke and heat generation in the event of a fire.

  • Fixtures with metal enclosures are generally permitted for installation in plenum spaces.
  • Fixtures with non-metallic enclosures must be listed for use in air-handling spaces and typically evaluated to UL 2043 for low smoke and heat release characteristics.
    • Any wiring installed in the plenum must be plenum-rated (CMP or CL2P) or enclosed in a metal conduit.
    • Small plastic parts weighing less than 30 grams individually may qualify for exemption from UL 2043 testing.

IMPORTANT: UL guidelines may not be accepted in all jurisdictions. Always verify with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to confirm compliance and product acceptance before selecting or installing lighting fixtures in plenum spaces.
